Basic Speed Limit (Rural)
The speed limit outside a city, town, or village on a primary highway is 100km/h unless otherwise posted.
Backing a Passenger Vehicle to the Left
A driver should look over their left shoulder while taking occasional glances to the front.
Green Right-Turn Arrow with Red Light
A driver may proceed in the direction of the arrow when safe without stopping.
Demerit Point Suspension (Full License)
A fully licensed driver is suspended after accumulating 15 points.
Passing a Large Truck on a Two-Way Highway
A driver should leave extra room before returning to their lane.
Right Turn at a Red Traffic Light
To turn, a driver must signal, ensure there is no prohibiting sign, stop, look left and right, and yield the right-of-way before proceeding.
Dangerous Goods Route Sign
A sign indicating the designated route for vehicles carrying dangerous goods.
Solid White Line (Urban)
A single solid white line between driving lanes in an urban area indicates that lane changing is not permitted.
Parking Lane
That portion of a primary highway between the edge of the roadway to the right of traffic and the nearest solid white line (not the centre line).
Shoulder Checking
Glancing towards the blind spot in the direction the driver intends to move.
Slippery When Wet Sign
A warning sign indicating that the pavement becomes slippery when it is wet.
Red X Traffic-Lane Control Light
Indicates that travel is not permitted in that specific lane.
Parental Consent Withdrawal
A parent can withdraw previously given consent for a driver's license if the person is under 18 years of age and is not self-supporting or married.
Railway Crossing Sign
A sign indicating a track crossing, often shaped like a crossbuck.
Parking Downhill on a Two-Way Road
The driver should turn the front wheels toward the curb or edge of the roadway and set the parking brake.
Assisting a Passing Vehicle
If a vehicle is attempting to pass on a two-way road, the driver being passed should stay in the lane and move to the right portion of the lane.
Recommended Braking Procedure
Apply brake pressure, ease off slightly just before the vehicle stops, then re-apply sufficient pressure to bring the vehicle to a smooth stop.
Reversing in a Straight Line
Place the left hand at the top of the steering wheel and look over the right shoulder through the rear window.
Weaver Zone
A highway area where entrance and exit lanes are close together, requiring exiting vehicles to drive between accelerating entering vehicles.
Dual Turns
Turns permitted only when indicated by pavement markings or traffic control signs.
Yield Sign
Requires yielding the right-of-way to traffic not facing the sign and all pedestrians in the intersection.
Over-driving Headlights
Travelling at a speed that does not permit the driver to see an object in time to stop within the illuminated distance.
GDL Passenger Demerit
Under the Graduated Driver Licensing program, a driver receives 2 demerits for having more passengers than there are seat belts.
2-Second Rule
A method to judge a safe following distance that is accurate at any speed.
Concealed Intersection Sign
A warning sign indicating an intersection is ahead on the right that may not be easily visible.
Flashing Red Traffic Light
Requires the driver to come to a full stop and proceed only when it is safe to do so.
Yield Sign Ahead Warning
A sign indicating that the driver is approaching a yield sign.
Alberta Passenger Restraint Law
The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 16 years of age are properly restrained.
Parallel Parking Distance
The vehicle's wheels closest to the curb must be within a maximum distance of 30cm.
Medical Condition Reporting
The driver is the person responsible and legally obligated to report medical conditions that may affect their driving ability.
Stopped Vehicle for Pedestrians
It is illegal for other vehicles approaching from the rear to pass a vehicle that has stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross.
Left Turn from One-Way Road
A driver must be in the left lane nearest the left curb to perform this turn unless otherwise permitted.
Stopping Behind Another Vehicle
A driver should allow sufficient space to move into another lane without reversing.
Log-Haul Truck Hazard
It is unsafe to pass a loaded log-haul truck that is turning because the log overhang could block all lanes during the turn.
Slow Moving Vehicle Sign
A sign that must be displayed on the rear of any vehicle that normally travels at speeds less than 40km/h.
School Zone Sign
A sign indicating a designated school area where special caution and speed limits may apply.
Funeral Procession
Drivers must yield the right-of-way and not break through the procession when it is crossing an intersection.
