SI Base Units
Standardized units defined carefully for seven chosen physical quantities so that accurate and reproducible measurements can be made.
SI Derived Units
Units of physical quantities obtained by multiplying and/or dividing base quantities.
Newton (N)
The special name and symbol given to the derived unit of force, which is kgm/s2 in terms of base units.
Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM)
The international organization established by the Metre Convention in 1875, through which Member States act together to promote and advance the global comparability of measurements.
Metre Convention
The 1875 convention through which Member States established the BIPM.
Unit for Area
A derived unit expressed as m2 (m×m), using the base unit of length.
Unit for Velocity
A derived unit expressed as m/s.
Unit for Acceleration
A derived unit expressed as m/s2.
Length (l)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of metre (m).
Mass (m)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of kilogram (kg).
Time (t)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of second (S).
Electric Current (I)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of ampere (A).
Temperature (T)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of kelvin (K).
Amount of Substance (n)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of mole (mol).
Light Intensity (L)
An SI base quantity with the base unit of candela (cd).
