Electrolysis
The process of using electricity to cause a chemical reaction, essentially 'splitting with electricity'.
Electrolyte
A liquid or solution that contains ions and conducts electricity.
Electrode
A solid conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an electrolyte during electrolysis.
Electrolysis Process
An electric current passes through the electrolyte, causing ions to move towards the electrodes where they form uncharged elements, creating a flow of charge through the external circuit.
Positive Ions in Electrolysis
Move towards the negative electrode (cathode).
Negative Ions in Electrolysis
Move towards the positive electrode (anode).
Electrolysis of Molten Ionic Solids
Molten ionic compounds can be broken up/decomposed via electrolysis because the ions can move freely and conduct electricity.
