Mount Escape Basics
Pick a side. On escape side, extend your leg.
Kick feet into inside position
On the support side, step outside their foot to push off slightly to put you on your hip so that your extended leg is on the ball of the foot and your knee is not only pointed out but down.
On the escape side, Insert your elbow inside the knee, supported by the top elbow frame. Do not let the top elbow frame cross the midpoint of their body.
Mount Escapes 1 - Hip Escapes
Hip escape out with inner elbow frame and slide knee under.
Go back and forth doing both sides to threaten one after another.
As you hip escape and get on one side you can put hands on their hips with elbows still on the mat, then push them to the opposite side of the hip escape
Mount Escapes 2 - Foot Scooping
From the space created during hip escapes, you can begin to use foot scooping
Scoop under - The far side foot scoops under their shin to lift and extract the near side leg for lockdown or butterfly hook
Scoop over - To scoop their leg with your right foot, use your heel to get purchase under it. To lift it up, pinch your knees and scissor your top leg down along your other leg, so it lifts their knee. Give a quick push with hand as needed but beware of them pulling your elbow up to insert higher mount
Mount Escapes 3 - Bridging
Bridge to Roll -
Control an arm through 2 on 1 vs collar grip, overhook, or other.
Step over the foot on same side and Upa roll them over
Bridge to Butterfly hook - Bridge up and on the way down, as the knee raises, drag your knee under theirs to insert the butterfly hook
Mount Escapes: Crossface - Kipping Escape
Get on a hip with small bridge
Feet higher than knees
Raise them over a shoulder as you vibrate legs
If they start to stuff you then work to other side
Mount Escapes: High Hands Post
Lifting Escape - Keeping both elbows on the mat, 2 hands grab their belt. Bridge hips up to bump their hips up and insert a knee
I Don’t Believe Escape - Hands into the armpits, bridge, and toss them aside
Mount Escapes: Grapevine & Crossed Feet
Grapevine
If they have your feet in a tight grapevine, bring your left foot in a few inches and hold for a moment, then kick out to slip the leg.
Pop up their knee and recover half guard.
Or…Use that foot to kick off the other grapevine.
Crossed Feet
Step down on their ankles
Find the top ankle and kick it straight off then get feet back inside
Mount Escape: Hand Fighting
Elbow Scooping - As soon as you feel them begin to scoop up your elbow, immediately switch sides and put other elbow to the mat and dig in. As you switch, immediately work into an escape. You may have to switch back and forth a few times
Underhook - Grab their belt or their lat and pinch your elbow in. Slide other hand underneath and grab your own hand to pin their arm and try to work to Upa escape.
Cross Hand Control Drop - When they cross grip to bring your arm to the ground, use your other hand to push into their tricep to push them off to the side lon enough to recover your elbow inside the knee line.
Gift Wrap - Reach hand inside the gift wrap and SMH grip your head to clear it from under your chin. Grab own wrist and bring it back to center
Mount Escape - Cross Collar
Bridge escape
2 on 1 on arm & Shrug shoulders
Rf step out to push off, Lf block their foot for upa
Head shift to right since their head needs to be over yours
Bridge and actually roll into your hip
If they come up on foot, pendelum feet in, then rotate hips to center to clear the foot space. Elbow on the mat, frame hand to their hip. Try to extend their leg as much as possible
High Mount Escape 1 - Feet Insertion
Push into their armpits to extend them as high as possible
Pull your feet up and insert one foot into an armpit to extend them further
Insert the other foot and push them forward
High Mount Escape 2 - Leg Extension
Grab the gi lapel and pull down to force them to keep post down
Grab the pants and extend leg out
Raise the leh while driving them away
High Mount Escape 3 - Point of No Return
Turn Left Knee toward the mat, and do a big step over with right foot to start to turn hips to the mat
Offer Back exposure - Bring top arm all the way across by keeping elbow tight to your body. As they take the back, immediately go to the far side leg pressure to escape
Arm bar exposure - As you come across, your top arm reaches high to swim it to the other side. If they posture, they’ve taken the bait and, prepare to immediately pendelum legs and bring own elbow to the mat.
Back Control Escape
Engage in Hand fighting
Start with a tabletop escape by walking straight back over them.
Pick a side and put your head on the “Weak Side” of their head, going in the direction the choking hand is pointing.
As you shift your hips to the side, keep hips parallel with the ground, not turned on side.
To clear the legs, rotate your knees under and face the sky, then use the inside knee raise (like body triangle escape) to keep them from recovering their hooks,
Make sure your head is lower than theirs. To get your head lower than theirs, do a crunch forward to create space so their head isn’t under yours then slide your head under theirs
Try to get your inside elbow on the ground between you
When you turn into them, Scissor your legs or as you sit out, have your butt pointed away to act as a post. Your outside hand grabs at their knee to keep them from elevating to mount. You can also use a butterfly hook.
Inside arm comes around their head
Back Control Hand Fighting: Seatbelt
Crossed Grips Escape
The underhooked hand grips the choking arm
The hand on same side as choking hand comes under the choking arm and grabs the underhooked hand in a dorsal grip.
Break their grip, then use the hand controlling the choking arm and slide it over your arm and under to the cross gripped double underhooks
Back Control Hand Fighting: Choke & Hand
This is assuming they have good control with choking hand on your shoulder and underhook hand controlling the Dorsal Grip.
Use free hand to dorsal grip their choking hand while you look toward their hand.
Free your underhooked dorsal grip using the pinky up pinky down escape - Rotate the hand up and pinky to the sky with a high elbow then quick switch to pinky down and pull your elbow in. Pump escape as needed.
Once your hand is free, go to a 2 on 1 grip. Take choking side opposite hand and C post on the hand, not the wrist with a high elbow.
Cleared Choking Arm - Bring their elbow over your shoulder and bring shoulder high and tight to your own ear.
Back Control Hand Fighting - Trapped Arm Escape 1
(Assuming a Left arm trapped)
They are Lower on the Arm
Bring your left leg under so your hand can be in front of your thigh sort of like how you clear the legs. Since this is a pin, use motion to try to get motion to create space using multiple directions
Sliding your hand up to the inside of your belly
Using the right leg thigh lift against their leg can help create space (sort of like body triangle escaping)
Kipping your arm out by leading with your shoulder toward the mat to clear your elbow
Back Control Hand Fighting - Trapped Arm Escape 2
They are high on the arm and you can’t kip out.
Bring your hand behind your back and limp arm out. Keep the arm tight to the body and lead the shoulder out toward the ground.
Even if you don’t clear the arm, you can at least create space to try to keep working your arm out.
Back Control Hand Fighting - Trapped Arm Escape 3
They have a high leg blocking your hip.
Left leg post, and shift your hips forward by rotating your hips into them.
Then step on the foot and jump over the leg.
Keep the wrist tight to your body to avoid getting crucified and be ready to insert your left butterfly hook.
Back Control Body Lock Escape
Prep Work
2 on 1 on the choking arm before you clear their feet. Have your shoulder inserted to block the choke.
You want to have their leg knot on top.
If they are hooking your leg you need to bring it far forward, then shoot it under theirs.
Escape
Use your knee to bump their foot up to your waistline.
Then, using the hand on the same side as the choking hand, grab their foot and pull it high.
Rotate into them
Back Control - Seated with No Hooks
Post a hand on the ground and jump over their leg to side control.
From the post, raise your hips high to the opposite side to slide past their hip.
Back Control Escape - Flattened
Start by recovering each hand by reaching out in front, then pulling them back in tucking in the elbows.
Take one foot and clear the hook, laying it flat on the inside, which allows you to roll to your side. Then you walk back into them to create space so you can escape.
Dogfighting Position (Underhook Outside)
It’s important to step up with outside foot on all of these.
Limp Arm - Don’t use with wrestlers. Relax elbow and whip arm out to take the back
Knee Pick - Drop from underhook to leg control. Grab far knee and foot. Drive forward
Knee Slide - Take inside knee and baseball slide forward onto your hip (moving their leg as well) to put them on their hip as you turn back into them using your outside foot post
Whizzer Roll - Shoot for a scoop grip and roll them to their back. If they post, pop your head over the shoulder for a back take
Walk Around - Both feet walk around them in a big circle as you pull them to the far hip.
Back Control - Butterfly Leg Underhook
If they have a butterfly under hook with their leg, kick straight out to boot and free it or just use the free foot to clear it.
If you can turn your hips you can attack Ashi Garami from there.
If they try to kick you up, come up to your base and turn in to face them.
N/S Turtle - Single Leg Grip
To Complete the single leg
Circle and drive into them until you can get your outside elbow between their feet and on the mat to pin it.
Step over their foot with your own outside foot and pull it in toward you.
Grab the far knee and drive in.
N/S Turtle Headlock 3 - 2 on 1 Whip Out
Grab their elbow and wrist.
Throw your opposite shoulder back and look away
Arm drag them across
N/S Turtle Headlock 1 - Counter Headlock
If possible try to counter Headlock by reaching near side arm over their head and pulling their head down as you drive into them. If you can’t reach over their head then do the following:
Grab the choking arm 2 on 1. Turn your body perpendicular so their choking arm is turned away from them. They will often attempt to take the back, so be prepared for the jump.
Circle feet around and sit back to Closed Guard
If they threatening Guillotine, try to break grip or go to hands on hips and prepare to roll
N/S Turtle Headlock 2 - DuPlessis Defense to Guard Pull
Grab the choking arm 2 on 1.
Turn your body perpendicular so their choking arm is turned away from them.
They can’t complete the choke from here. Use your near side hand and grab their belt and sit on your hip.
Use the near side foot to knee shield with instep across their lat, with a high foot.
Post your bottom foot on their hip as you sit back and recover to guard.
They will often attempt to take the back, so be prepared for the jump. If they start to come around, clear the choking arm to the inside, post on the ground with your outside hand and shoot your hips so you turn to face them sitting up.
N/S Turtle Headlock - Closed Guard Recovery
Bring your head opposite the choking arm
Walk your feet around and sit on your butt as you fall back to Closed Guard
N/S Turtle Body Lock - Peek Out or Bump
Peek Out
Post a hand on the mat and look high as you step up with that same side foot
Other foot shoots through like a baseball slide as your head comes straight back over their shoulder
Turn the corner and face them.
Bump
Post both hands between their feet
Bring your knees in and pop them up by their hips using your shoulders
Others to cover
Side Control

Turtle
Side Control Basic Frame
Don’t panic. To reduce initial pressure don’t be flat. Try to raise outside hip and shoulder 1 inch off the mat
Frame near side elbow into their hip to create a wedge with hand upward, not compressed. This is to prevent transition to North South
Frame near side knee into their hip with a high foot raised in the air, not posted on the knee. This is to prevent transition to mount and to more easily dig in foot.
Outside forearm will create frame under their chin. To access, raise the outside hand and place the shoulder against their cheek. Bridge up and roll shoulder to move their chin over, then as you come down insert the forearm
Side Control - Closed Guard Recovery
Frame elbow into hip wedge. Frame knee into hip with a high foot raised in the air, not posted on the knee
Hip escape onto your right hip and dig your inside leg knee in. Connect knee to elbow
Defeat the crossface by swimming in an smh frame.
Put your outside foot on top of your inside foot over their hip and push off with both legs to turn you perpendicular
Extract bottom leg and step through to guard
Side Control - Tricep Push Escape
Often occurs as someone brings their arm to the opposite side of the head or from a crossface attempt redirected by a 2 on 1 grip
Near side hand posts into the tricep and extends to a straight arm.
Power prop the elbow to sit up and post on the base hand as you extend them away with the arm in the tricep. ***It is essential that the arm remains completely straight and extended through the sit up, as the tendency is to let it bend
From here you can either scoot your hips back or continue to drive them forward toward your feet.
