Instance
a replica (duplicate) of a shape. If the original shape is modified (changed) all of the instances are automatically updated too. Saves memory.
wireframe
a way to view your model that does not show surfaces (shading)...just edges of polygons that make up the object
Boolean
objects can be added or subtracted from each other to create new shapes
Isoparms
help define the detail of nurbs. Similar to adding segments to primitive objects to smooth them
flat shading
simply coloring an object
Phong shading
gives objects a smooth appearance (anti-aliasing). A Phong tag is automatically added to every object you create
FFD (Free Form Deformation)
control points that allow you to do a manual deformation to reshape
Polygon
flat surface made of 3 or more sides
N-Gon
polygon that has more than 4 corner points
Normals
show which polygons face inside and which polygons face outside
Orthographic view
2D view of an object (front, right and top view)
Perspective view
3D view of an object
Polygonal mesh
Editable object made of points, edges, and polygons
Origin
The rotation point (X, Y, Z) of a scene or object
Cartesian Coordinates System
Describes the location of objects in 3D space
Axis which describes "depth"
Z
Axis which describes "width"
X
Axis which describes "height"
Y
"H" rotation coordinate tells which direction
left and right
"P" rotation coordinate tells which direction
forward and backward
"B" rotation coordinate tells which direction
side to side
Hierarchy
Controls how 3D objects and commands interact with each other
Aspect ratio
Proportions that describe width to height of various TV screens. In 3D it is known as "scaling".
Vertices
Points on a geometric shape that define edges of polygons
Lathe Nurb
Rotates a spline object around an axis
Extrude Nurb
Gives thickness to a spline
Loft Nurb
Attaches a skin over two or more splines. Also called "skinning"
Sweep Nurb
A closed spline that follows a line or curve creating a solid shape
