Single-subject designs (single-case designs)

Research designs that use the results from a single participant (or only a few). Often uses nonexp. and and time-series designs. Sometimes capable of examining cause-and-effect: Would need to manipulate IV and control EV, but limited generalizations.

Evaluating results

Usually can’t do stats. Single-subject do not have sets of scores. Interpretation of results depends on visual inspection.

Phase

Series of observations of the same individual under the same conditions. Minimum of 3 observations.

Baseline phase (A)

Series of baseline observations made when no treatment is being administered.

Treatment phase (B)

Series of observations made when a treatment is being administered.

Deciding to change phases

After clear pattern is found. Ethical concerns: Improvement- don’t change, threatening behavior- change.
