Slow-twitch muscles
Red muscle fibers which contract slowly and release little force but are slow to fatigue
Eccentric
Part of a movement where the muscle is lengthening and controlling the movement with resistance and gravity
Tendons
Attach muscles to bones
Motor unit
A motor nerve and all the muscle fibers it controls
Isotonic
Muscle movement where the body part moves against resistance/gravity
Concentric
Part of a movement where the muscle shortens and creates force
Fast-twitch muscles
White muscle fibers that are quick to fatigue but release large amounts of force quickly
Muscle fiber recruitment
Process of involving more muscle fibers to increase force production during a movement
Hypertrophy
Increase in muscle size due to training
Hyperplasia
Increase in muscle quantity
Isometric
Muscle movement where muscle does not move but there is still tension
About how many skeletal muscles are in the body?
~600
Maintenance phase
Phase of weight training where only 1 workout per week is required
Starter phase
Beginning phase of weight training; shortest phase
Slow progression phase
2nd phase of weight training: longest phase
Isokinetic
Muscle movement where force is kept equal through the entire movement
Intermediate-twitch fibers
Muscle fibers that have both the characteristics of slow and fast twitch fibers; contract quickly, fatigue resistant
