Miescher
Isolated “nuclein” from soiled bandages in 1869.
Garrod
Studied Protein s & inborn errors in 1902.
Sutton
Studied Chrom osome structure in 1903.
Morgan
Studied Gene mapping in 1913.
Griffith’s Experiment
Discovered Transf orming Principle in 1928.
Chargaff
Studied Base pairing & species specific in 1947.
Hershey and Chase
Conducted experiments in 1952 that helped confirm DNA as genetic material
Friedrich Miescher
Analyzed pus cells from discarded surgical bandages and discovered “nuclein” = nucleic acid
Chargaff's Rule
States that A always pairs with T and C always pairs with G.
Viruses
Showed that genes are made of DNA
Alfred Hershey & Martha Chase (1952)
Infected Escherchia coli (E. coli) = Host cell and Used Radioactive Isotopes: (S35) Sulfur-35 (P32) Phosphorus-32
Why did Hershey & Chase use Sulfur-35 and Phosphorus-32?
Sulfur is found in proteins and not in DNA. Phosphorus is found in DNA but not in protein
Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin
Worked to discover the 3-D structure of DNA.
James Watson and Francis Crick
In 1953 published a one-page paper in Nature “Molecular Structure of Nuclei Acids: Deoxynucleic Acids”
