Tourism
The sum of phenomena and relationships arising from the travel and stay of nonresidents, insofar as they do not lead to permanent residence and are not connected to any earning activity.
Hospitality
From Latin meaning to receive as a guest; the host who welcomes, receives, and caters to the needs of people temporarily away from home.
Tourist
A person who visits a country other than their usual residence for at least 24 hours.
Excursionist
A visitor who visits for a short trip and does not stay overnight (day visitor).
Food and Beverage services
Provision of meals and drinks in locations such as hotels, airlines, restaurants, taverns, kiosks, food carts, and other venues.
Lodging
Overnight or long-term accommodation provided to guests, ranging from budget motels to luxury hotels.
Destination
A geographical unit where the tourist visits and stays; its success depends on the interaction of core factors such as attractions, accessibility, and amenities.
Tourist product
A bundle that combines what the tourist does at the destination with the services used during the stay.
Tourist services
Services that support travel and tourism, including transportation, accommodation, food and beverage, entertainment, and services of travel agents and tour operators, plus currency, documentation, information, sightseeing, and shopping.
Transportation
The main means of moving people from place to place, including land, sea, and air, with public and private options.
Travel agency
An organization that sells travel services to consumers.
Travel agent
A person who sells travel services through a travel agency.
Tour operator
A wholesaler who contracts with hotels, airlines, and other providers to create travel packages for retailers.
Domestic tourism
Tourism that takes place within one's own country.
International tourism
Tourism that occurs across international borders.
Balance of payments
Tourism’s contribution to a country’s balance of payments and overall economic accounts.
Economic development
The broader economic growth and development fostered by tourism and hospitality.
Cultural enrichment
Cultural benefits and exchange resulting from tourism activities.
Educational significance
The educational value and learning opportunities provided by travel and hospitality activities.
Peace
Tourism as a vital force for global peace and cross-cultural understanding.
Network
A complicated interconnection of parts or components within the tourism and hospitality system.
Distance
The difference between local travel within a person’s home community and nonlocal travel.
Length of Stay
The duration of time a traveler remains at a destination, including overnight stays or day visits.
Residence or origin
The traveler’s place of residence or origin, used for classification and analysis.
Site attraction
An attraction that is part of the destination’s inherent features.
Event attraction
An attraction based on a scheduled event or happening.
Natural attraction
An attraction based on natural features such as landscapes, beaches, or wildlife.
Man-made attraction
An attraction created by humans, such as museums, monuments, or theme parks.
