When are ions formed?
When electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
What are the simplest ions?
Single atoms which have either lost or gained electrons so as to have a full outer shell.
What do elements of the same group have?
The same number of outer electrons
What do elements have to do for a full outer shell?
Lose or gain electrons
What do elements of the same group form?
Ions with the same charges
How do group 1 elements form ions?
Lose 1 electron to form 1+ ion
How do group 2 elements form ions?
Lose 2 electrons to form 2+ ions
How do group 6 elements form ions?
Gain 2 electrons to form 2- ions
How do group 7 elements form ions?
Gain 1 electron to form 1- ions
What are molecular ions?
Ions that are made up of a group of atoms with an overall charge.
What’s the formula for a nitrate ion?
NO3-
