Cilia
Motile cytoplasmic extensions on the apical surface of epithelial cells that help in movement such as clearing mucus.
Immortal Cilia Syndrome
A disease caused by dysfunction of dynein arms in cilia, leading to impaired movement and various health problems.
Zonula Occludens
Also known as tight junctions; structures that stitch adjacent epithelial cells together to prevent movement of proteins and substances between cells.
Zonula Adherence
Cell junctions that involve E-cadherins, which hold cells together through calcium-dependent interactions.
Macula Adherence (Desmosomes)
Focal points of adhesion between cells that provide structural stability and are linked to intermediate filaments.
Gap Junctions
Channels that allow direct communication between adjacent cells, letting small ions and molecules pass.
Basal Lamina
A layer of extracellular matrix secreted by epithelial cells, consisting of proteins like laminin and collagen type IV.
Lamina Reticularis
A layer of the basal membrane consisting of connective tissue fibers, particularly collagen type III.
Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa
A genetic condition caused by mutations in collagen type VII, leading to skin fragility and blistering.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
A condition caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, leading to muscle degeneration and weakness.
