What is stress as defined in Unit 1 of Chapter 1?
A reaction caused by ongoing, increasing or new pressures or demands.
What is eustress and what is distress?
Eustress is positive, good and necessary stress; distress is negative, harmful bad stress.
Name the four categories of stressors listed in the notes.
Physical stressors; Environmental stressors; Emotional stressors; Social stressors.
What are ‘I’ statements’ used for in conflict resolution?
They resolve interpersonal conflicts using phrases like 'I feel… When… Because… And I would like…'.
Define ‘Rites of passage’.
Rituals or ceremonies that symbolise important life stages and help move a person to a new social status.
What is a lifestyle plan?
A plan to live a healthy and balanced life to promote quality of life, including exercise, nutrition, outdoor recreation, sleep, and healthy habits.
What is BMI and how is it used with age?
BMI = weight in kg divided by height in m^2; used for adults over 20; for those under 20 it is only a guideline since growth varies.
What are the core muscles and core strength?
Core refers to the abdominal and back muscles around the spine and pelvis; core strength means strong torso muscles.
What is cardio kickboxing?
A mix of boxing, martial arts, and aerobics.
What is School Based Assessment (SBA)?
All formal assessments, including examinations, conducted by the school throughout the year on a continuous basis.
Why is obtaining the NSC important?
The NSC enables access to higher education, can be a basic requirement for bursaries and jobs, and demonstrates key skills like critical thinking and teamwork.
What does SMART stand for in goal setting?
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely.
Name three reasons for unemployment mentioned in the notes.
Skill–job mismatch; corruption/‘jobs for friends’; difficulty for first-time entrants; lack of education/skills.
What is volunteering as a solution to unemployment?
Giving time and skills without payment; builds confidence, explores interests, and can yield certificates.
What is entrepreneurship?
Seeing a need and providing a good or service to satisfy that need.
What is an informal job?
Usually short-term, flexible work without a formal contract.
What are the core elements of a BCEA job contract?
Employee name, job title, employer details, hours of work, pay, deductions, overtime, leave, and related terms.
What is the Labour Relations Act (LRA) about?
Promotes economic development, social justice, labour peace and democracy; sets rules for relationships and establishes the CCMA.
What do ‘equity’ and ‘redress’ mean in SA labour law?
Equity = fairness and equal opportunity; Redress = correcting past unfairness (e.g., affirmative action) and ensuring fair treatment.
What is a trade union?
An organisation that represents workers’ interests in the workplace and engages in collective bargaining.
What rights do trade union members have regarding dues and representation?
Right to elect representatives; authorise deduction of union subscriptions; have access to union information and support.
What are the roles of the media in a democracy?
Inform, educate, entertain; expose rights violations and corruption; provide political information and promote debate and nation-building.
What are constitutional limits to freedom of expression?
Limitations include propaganda for war, incitement of imminent violence, advocacy of hatred, and incitement to harm.
What is foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)?
A condition resulting from alcohol use during pregnancy; no amount of alcohol is considered safe and it can cause learning problems.
How are lifestyle diseases linked to poverty and gender imbalances?
Poverty affects access to nutrition, sanitation, and healthcare, increasing risk of lifestyle diseases; gender roles influence health risks.

Unsafe sexual behaviour; poor eating habits; hypertension; tobacco use; substance abuse; lack of exercise.
What are prevention strategies for lifestyle diseases?
Avoid tobacco; regular physical activity; heart-healthy nutrition; limit sugar/salt; vaccinations (HBV, HPV); regular screenings.
What is hospice care?
A facility providing palliative care to relieve pain and support patients and families at the end of life.
What should a personal mission statement include?
Your purpose, values, beliefs, and goals; influenced by your views, values, religion, and culture.
What is the impact of vision on actions and behaviour?
A clear vision guides choices, motivates effort, and helps you set and achieve meaningful goals.
