What is a solution?
A chemically and physically homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances.
What is a solute?
The substance that gets dissolved; usually present in a smaller amount.
What is a v/v solution?
Volume/volume solution where both solute and solvent are measured in mL or L; standardized to 100 mL.
What does 70% v/v alcohol mean?
70 mL of pure alcohol diluted to a total of 100 mL.
What is a w/v solution?
Weight/volume solution; grams of solid per 100 mL of solution
What is a w/w solution?
Grams of active ingredient per 100 g of mixture.
What does a 5% solution mean?
5 g (or 5 mL) of solute in 100 mL of solution.
Types of percent solutions?
w/v → grams per 100 mL
v/v → mL per 100 mL
How many grams of NaCl are in 1 L of 10% NaCl?
100 g.
How many grams of Procaine HCl are in 200 mL of a 2% solution?
4 g.
What is the % strength if 0.5 g is in 1 L?
0.05%.
What does a ratio 1:100 mean?
1 part solute to 100 parts solution
Ratio strength of a 0.5% solution?
1:200.
Young's Rule formula?
Child dose=AgeAge+12/×Adult dose
Example: 7‑year‑old, adult dose 50 mg
18.4 mg.
Clark's Rule formula?
Child dose=Weight (lbs)/150×Adult dose
Example: 70 lb child, adult dose 30 mg
14 mg.
What is the proportion setup for dosage calculations?
Original dose/Original amount=Desired dose/Amount to give
You have 5 mg in 15 mL. How many mL for a 2 mg dose?
6 mL.
What is a solute?
What gets dissolved
What is a solvent?
The liquid that dissolves the solute.
What does V/V mean?
mL of solute per 100 mL of solution.
What does W/V mean?
Grams of solute per 100 mL of solution
What does W/W mean?
Grams of solute per 100 g of mixture.
What does % strength mean?
Parts of solute per 100 mL of solution.
How do you convert % strength to ratio strength?
Ratio strength = 1 : (100 ÷ %).
What is Young's Rule?
Age‑based pediatric dose calculation
What is Clark's Rule?
Weight‑based pediatric dose calculation.
What is the proportion formula used in drug calculations?
(Dose ÷ Amount) = (Dose ÷ Amount).
