Mercury
The smallest planet and closest to the Sun, featuring no atmosphere to trap heat, craters like the Moon, and extreme temperature swings from 430°C in the daytime to -180°C at night.
Venus
Known as Earth's 'evil twin,' it is the hottest planet in the solar system due to a runaway greenhouse effect from its dense atmospheric carbon dioxide, maintaining a constant surface temperature of 470°C and retrograde rotation.
Earth
Our home planet and the only known place to harbor life, featuring liquid water covering 71% of its surface, a protective atmosphere composed of nitrogen and oxygen, and one natural satellite.
Mars
A cold, dusty terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, evidence of ancient liquid water, and home to Olympus Mons.
Olympus Mons
The largest volcano in the solar system, located on Mars, which stands at three times the height of Mount Everest.
Jupiter
The largest planet in the solar system, categorized as a Gas Giant mainly composed of hydrogen and helium, featuring the Great Red Spot storm, over 79 known moons, and the strongest magnetic field.
Great Red Spot
A massive, century-old storm located in the atmosphere of the gas giant Jupiter.
Saturn
The least dense planet in the solar system—which would float in water—famous for its seven distinct major rings made of ice and rock particles.
Titan
Saturn's largest moon, notable for being the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere.
Uranus
An Ice Giant planet with a unique 98-degree axial tilt that causes it to rotate on its side, a coldest atmospheric temperature of -224°C, and atmospheric methane that gives it a blue tint.
Neptune
The most distant planet from the Sun, characterized by faint rings, an orbital period of 165 Earth years, and the fastest supersonic winds in the solar system reaching 2,100 km/h.
Terrestrial Planets
The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) composed primarily of rocks and metals, featuring solid surfaces, small average sizes, thin to moderate atmospheres, and few to no moons.
Gas Giants
The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) composed of gases (hydrogen, helium) and ices, featuring massive sizes, no solid surface, deep atmospheres, ring systems, and dozens of moons.
Goldilocks Zone
Also known as the Circumstellar Habitable Zone, the region around a star where atmospheric temperatures are 'just right' to allow liquid water to exist on a planet's surface.
Retrograde Rotation
The rotational motion of a planet spinning backward relative to the orbital direction of most planets, observed on Venus and Uranus.
Astronomical Unit (AU)
A standard unit of measurement corresponding to Earth's distance from the Sun (1.0 AU), providing the temperature conditions required for stable liquid water.
