What is the conservation of energy?
Energy can not be created or destroyed only transferred between different forms or objects
What happens when Energy is transferred to an object?
The energy is stored in one of the objects energy stores
What are the different energy stores and give definition
Thermal/internal – heat energy trapped within an object
Kinetic – movement or motion of an object
Gravitational potential energy – energy that an object possesses because of its position in a gravitational field
Elastic potential energy – energy held in an already stretched spring
Chemical energy – energy held in chemical bonds
Magnetic energy
Electrostatic energy
Nuclear energy – get from breaking atoms apart
Why is energy in each of these stores not fixed ?
Bc energy is transferred
What ways can energy be transferred
Mechanically – by a force doing work
Electrically – work done by a moving charges
By heating
By radiation – by light or sound waves
What is a system
Collection of matter or a group of objects/single objects
What happens when a system changes
Energy is transferred either between objects or between different forms (different types of energy stores
What happens in an open system
The matter of the system can exchange Energy from the Outside world (outside system)
Why can an open system lose or gain energy
as it interact with the outside world
What happens in a closed syst m
a closed system is separate from the outside world so neither matter or Energy can enter or leave
Why is the overall charge always zero in a closed system
Even The energy can be transferred within the system. It cannot transfer energy using outside the world.
Give example where energy is transferred through heating kettle
Electrical energy from plug socket flows to heating element of the kettle where it’s transferred electrically to the thermal energy store of the kettle heating element which means that the flow electricity warms the metal heating element the heating element then transfers energy over to the water’s thermal energy store
What is another way of saying energy transferred
Work done
What are the types of work done
Mechanical and electrical
what is mechanical work done what does it involve give example kicking a ball
Mechanical work done involves using force to move an object an example is picking a ball chemical energy store of leg being transferred to kinetic energy store of the ball
What does electrical work done involve what happens
Electrical work done is done when current flows. – Energy required to overcome the resistance in the wires
