What is the therapeutic use of dimenhydrinate?
Anti-emesis, vertigo, motion sickness.
What are the common adverse drug reactions associated with dimenhydrinate?
Sedation and
Dry mouth, urinary retention, and constipation (anticholinergic effects)
What should be monitored in clients taking dimenhydrinate?
Monitor clients when ambulating,
Monitor for anticholinergic effects,
Bowel elimination patterns, vital signs, and manifestations of anaphylaxis.
How should dimenhydrinate be administered?
Orally, IM, or IV;
Initial dose should be given 30 to 60 minutes before triggering activity.
Subcu doses given before meals and at bedtime.
Do NOT swallow chewable tablets
What client instructions should be provided for dimenhydrinate?
Avoid driving or activities requiring mental alertness,
Sit or lie down if drowsy,
Change positions gradually,
Increase fluid and fiber intake,
Urinate every 4 hours, and
Report changes in urinary elimination.
What are the contraindications for dimenhydrinate?
Hypersensitivity,
Angle-closure glaucoma, and
Use in preterm or newborn infants.
What precautions should be taken when administering dimenhydrinate?
Use caution in cases of hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hepatic disease,
Pyloric obstruction, prostatic hypertrophy, older adults, and during pregnancy and lactation.
What interactions should be noted with dimenhydrinate?
Other CNS depressants can increase its sedative effects, and
MAO inhibitors can increase anticholinergic effects.
