What is phage typing?

Using a known virus to idetify an unknown bacterium.

3
New cards

How is a plaque formed on a plate?

Formed from the explosion of the bacterial cell full of newly synthesized bacteria. The explosion = no growth bc viruses need a host so that circular window is no E.coli growth just viruses by itself

4
New cards

What is a PFU/mL

Plaque forming units per mL

5
New cards

Do you use E.coli in serial dilution calculations and why/why not?

No because we don’t care for the E.coli cell growth just virus growth

6
New cards

Why is E.coli used in serial dilutions?

Plating a virus by itself will lead to no growth on the plate because they need a host to infect, so give them some E.coli to infect then you can see there growth

7

What is a coliphage?

A bacteriophage that infects E.coli?
