Why do we need reflex actions?

To allow us to respond to dangerous situations rapidly and automatically, to reduce risk

Do reflex actions involve the brain?

No they are not conscious decisions

What are autonomic actions?

- Heart rate

- Breathing

- Pupil reactions

Describe the spinal reflex arc.

1. Receptor picks up a stimulus and stimulates message

2. Message travels along sensory neurone

3. Message meets and travels along relay neurone

4. Message meets and travels along motor neurone

5. Response is initiated by an effector

What is a nocireceptor?

Pain receptor

Where does the sensory neurone meet the spinal chord?

Via the dorsal root

Where does the relay neurone leave the spinal chord?

Via the central root
