Serous membrane
A double-layered membrane, also known as serosa, that surrounds the walls of the ventral body cavity and the outer surfaces of the organs contained within it.
Parietal serosa
The layer of the serous membrane that is attached to the wall of the body cavity.
Visceral serosa
The layer of the serous membrane that is attached directly to the organs.
Ventral cavities
Body cavities, including the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities, that contain serous components.
Membrane (Tissue level)
A continuous layer of cells operating on the cellular level (distinct from a subcellular plasma membrane) that secretes fluid.
Function of serous membranes
Acts as a lubricant that prevents friction between organs and cavity walls, allowing organs to wiggle, slide, or inflate without scraping or moving out of place.
