Protein Function:
Proteins grow and repair body tissues, create enzymes, hormones and antibodies
Protein Types:
Animal meat (complete proteins) Plant based (incomplete proteins)
E.G : beef, chicken, fish, cottage cheese, yoghurt, beans, lentils, quinoa, nuts
Excess Protein:
Strain on kidneys, excess weight gain and dehydration
Protein Deficiency:
Muscle loss, slow healing, weak immune system
Carbohydrate Function:
Provide energy for the body
Carbohydrate Types:
Simple carbohydrates (sugars) complex carbohydrates (starch, fibres)
E. G : bread, pasta, fruit, rice, vegetables, sweets
Excess Carbohydrates:
Weight gain, increased risk of diabetes
Carbohydrate Deficiency:
Fatigue, weakness, poor concentration
Lipid Function:
Energy storage, insulation, protection of organs, helps absorb vitamins
Lipids Types:
Fats, oils, waxes, steroids
E.G : Butter, oil, nuts, seeds, dairy and meats
Excess Lipids:
Heart disease, high cholestral, obesity
Lipids Deficiency:
Dry skin, poor vitamin absorption, and hormonal effects
Vitamin Functions:
Support body processes such as immunity, hearing, vision and immunity.
Vitamins Types:
Water Soluble (Vitamins C, B) and Fat soluble (Vitamins A, D, E, K)
E.G : Fruits, vegetables, fibre, whole grains, dairy and fish
Excess Vitamins:
Water soluble: Usually flushed out of body but too many can lead to nausea or kidney strain and diarehhea
Fat soluble: Can build up and cause toxitity
Vitamin Deficiency:
Vitamin C: Scurvy
Vitamin D: Rickets
Vitamin A: Night blindness
Vitamin K: Bleeding problems
Mineral Function:
Help with bone health, nerve function, fluid balance and oxygen support
Mineral Types:
Major (Potassium, calcium, Sodium), Trace (Iron, Zinc, Copper)
E.G: Dairy, meat, leafy greens, whole grains, nuts
Excess Minerals:
Calcium: Kidney stones
Iron: Organ damage
Mineral Deficiency:
Iron: Anemia
Calcium: Weak bones
Iodine: Thyroid problems
Water Function:
Regulates body temperature, transports nutrients and waste, aids digestion.
Water Types:
No types, but found in water-rich foods and liquids.
E.G: Water, fruits, vegetables, soups
Water Excess:
Water intoxication (rare, can cause confusion and swelling)
Water Deficiency:
Dehydration, dizziness, dry skin, kidney issues
