Why is understanding color theory important for a salon professional?
It provides the foundation to create endless color possibilities and solve color challenges.
What are the two ways hair colorants change hair?
Temporarily (adding pigment that shampoos out) and Permanently (adding or removing pigment).
What is color?
The visual perception of the reflection of light.
What does the law of color state?
Only yellow, red, and blue (primary colors) are pure colors and cannot be created by mixing other colors.
How are secondary colors produced?
By mixing two primary colors in varying proportions.

Orange, Green, and Violet
How are tertiary colors created?
By mixing a primary color with its neighboring secondary color in varying proportions.
What is the color wheel used for in a salon?
To help mix hair colors and neutralize unwanted tones.
How is tone/hue identified?
By its position on the color wheel.
How are colors classified?
Warm colors or cool colors
What colors do warm tones generally fall into?
Yellow, orange, and red.
What colors do cool tones generally fall into?
Green, blue, and violet.
How can you tell is a client has cool undertones?
Blue veins are visible when the wrist is turned over.
How can you tell is a client has warm undertones?
Green veins are visible when the wrist is turned over.
What happens when two complementary colors are combined?
The result contains all three primary colors or produces a neutral color.
What are complementary colors used for in hair coloring?
To correct or neutralize unwanted tones.

Hue, Value, and Intensity
How are primary and secondary colors abbreviated?
By their first initial (R, O, Y, G, B, V)
What is value (level) in hair color?
The degree of lightness or darkness of a color, relative to itself and to other colors.
How is hair color classified using value?
As dark, medium, or light.
What is intensity regarding hair color?
The vividness, brightness, or saturation of a color within its own level.
What is the Level System?
A system used to determine the lightness or darkness of a hair color.
What is contributing pigment?
The natural melanin or combination of melanin and any previously applied artificial color remaining in the hair.
What is the relationship between intensity and neutralizing unwanted tones?
Understanding intensity helps in selecting the right amount of complementary color to neutralize unwanted tones.
Why is the level system important in hair coloring?
It helps in formulating hair color by identifying the client's existing level and the desired level.
