Elenchus
It means testing, and since those tested by Socratic questioning are often shown inadequate in their responses, it comes to mean refutation.
Thesis
Is (for example) the perceived truth. The starting point/status quo.
Antithesis
Is (then) an opposing point of view. A mechanism for change (e.g., opposing group, ideas, people).
Synthesis
When thought tries to reconcile with thesis and antithesis, what survives is this. The start of a new thesis. Progress.
Refutation
Resolution of contradictions.
