Soil
A porous, living, and dynamic natural body occurring at the Earth's surface that contains living matter and is capable of supporting plant growth.
Pedosphere
The part of Earth's surface where soils occur and soil-forming processes take place, serving as an interface between the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.
Atmosphere
The layer of gases surrounding Earth that interacts with the pedosphere through gases and precipitation.
Biosphere
The part of Earth where living organisms exist, including vegetation and soil organisms.
Hydrosphere
Earth's water bodies and water resources that interact with the pedosphere through water and runoff.
Lithosphere
The solid outer layer of Earth that provides parent material and bedrock for soil formation.
Soil Formation Factors
The five interactive drivers of soil development: climate, organisms, parent material, topography (relief), and time.
Climate (as a soil formation factor)
The soil-forming factor where temperature and moisture influence weathering, decomposition, and other soil-forming processes.
Parent Material
The rocks or sediments from which soil develops, providing much of its mineral material.
Topography (Relief)
The slope and landscape position that influence soil erosion, drainage, and accumulation of materials.
Three-Dimensional Body Concept
The traditional view of soil defined by length (horizontal distance), breadth (horizontal dimension perpendicular to length), and depth (vertical dimension extending downward).
Four-Dimensional Body Concept
The modern concept of soil as a space-time structure defined by length, breadth, depth, and time.
Upper Soil Boundary
The soil boundary generally defined as the interface between soil and the atmosphere or shallow water.
Lateral Soil Boundary
The soil boundary that may be associated with deep water, barren rock, ice, salt, or shifting desert dunes.
Lower Limit of Soil
The lower boundary of soil generally associated with the common rooting depth of native perennial plants.
Landscape
A three-dimensional portion of Earth's surface characterized by patterns of topography, rocks, soil, water, plants, and animals.
Production Function of Soil
The function of soil as a medium for plant growth, providing water, nutrients, rooting space, and physical support for food, feed, energy, and raw materials.
Ecological Regulator Function
The soil function of acting as a buffer, filter, and transformer of substances, such as filtering contaminants before they reach groundwater.
Habitat and Living Space Function
The soil function of providing a living environment for organisms like microorganisms, earthworms, insects, and plant roots.
Engineering Function of Soil
The function of soil as foundation material for buildings, support for roads and airports, and construction material for roads and dams.
Cultural Heritage Function of Soil
The function of soil in preserving remnants of past civilizations, plant remains, animal remains, and historical artifacts.
Pedology
The study of soil as a natural body, focusing on soil genesis, characteristics, classification, and geography.
Edaphology
The study of soil in relation to plant growth, particularly applied to agriculture, forestry, and ecology.
Engineer's Perspective of Soil
The professional viewpoint considering soil mainly as loose or broken rock material useful for construction and infrastructure.
Geologist's Perspective of Soil
The professional viewpoint considering soil as highly weathered rock material forming part of the Earth's outer layer.
Horticulturist's Perspective of Soil
The professional viewpoint considering soil as a growing medium that may require sterilization or modification for greenhouse production.
Agronomist's Perspective of Soil
The professional viewpoint focusing on soil's biological, chemical, and physical properties that allow it to support plant growth.

Friedrich Albert Fallou
