What is the central concept of Brunnstrom's approach?
Uses synergy patterns during early recovery
Synergies initially considered a necessary step toward recovery
Patient eventually progresses out of synergy patterns
Organized into 7 stages of recovery
⭐ Unlike NDT, Brunnstrom initially encourages synergies.
What is an associated reaction?
Involuntary/automatic movement
Occurs in one body part because of intentional or resisted movement elsewhere
What is homolateral synkinesis?
Flexion of involved UE
Facilitates flexion of involved LE on the same side
What is Raimiste's phenomenon?
Resistance to the uninvolved LE produces the same movement in the involved LE.
Example:
Resist abduction of good leg → involved leg abducts
What is Souques' phenomenon?
Raise involved UE above 100°
With elbow extended
Produces extension + abduction of fingers
What is a limb synergy?
Predictable group of muscles moving together
Produces stereotypical:
Flexion pattern OR
Extension pattern
