Which plane divides the body into equal right and left halves?
Midsagittal (median) plane
Which plane divides the body vertically into unequal right and left portions?
Parasagittal plane
How does the coronal/frontal plane divide the body?
Into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions
How does the transverse plane divide the body?
Into superior and inferior (upper and lower) portions
What are the six main pairs of opposite directional terms?
Superior ↔ Inferior; Anterior ↔ Posterior; Medial ↔ Lateral; Proximal ↔ Distal; Superficial ↔ Deep
What is the difference between posterior and anterior?
Posterior means toward the back; Anterior means toward the front.
What is the meaning of the term medial?
Toward the midline of the body
What is the difference between proximal and distal?
Proximal means closer to the point of attachment to the torso; Distal means farther from the point of attachment.
How are the wrist and hand described relative to each other using proximal and distal?
The hand is distal to the wrist; the wrist is proximal to the hand.
What is the position of the nose relative to the ears?
The nose is medial to the ears.
In anatomical position, what is the position of the thumb relative to the middle finger?
The thumb is lateral to the middle finger.
If you are standing on your head, what is the position of your head compared to your neck?
The head is inferior to the neck (because physically it is below the neck in that position).
What structure separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity?
Diaphragm
Which body cavity is located immediately inferior to the diaphragm?
Abdominal cavity
What structure divides the thoracic cavity into two parts and separates the pleural regions?
Mediastinum
Which body cavity contains most of the esophagus?
Thoracic cavity, primarily within the mediastinum
What major organs and structures are contained within the thoracic cavity?
Lungs, heart, most of the esophagus, and trachea
What structures are contained within each pleural cavity?
Each pleural cavity surrounds a lung (right lung in right pleural cavity, left lung in left pleural cavity).
What structures are contained within the mediastinum?
Heart, esophagus, trachea, and major blood vessels
What structures are located within the pelvic cavity?
Urinary bladder, internal reproductive organs, and rectum
What is contained within the cranial cavity?
The brain (inside the skull)
What term refers to the combined abdominal and pelvic cavities?
Abdominopelvic cavity
