Three-tiered architecture
A common enterprise network design consisting of three distinct layers: the core, the distribution layer, and the access layer.
Core layer
The central point of the network that contains critical resources such as servers, applications, databases, and core routers.
Distribution layer
The midpoint in a three-tiered architecture that provides redundancy and connectivity between the users and the core resources.
Access layer
The layer where users connect to the network, typically consisting of switches located close to the users, such as on the same floor of a building.
Collapsed core architecture
A two-tier network design used by smaller organizations that combines the core and distribution layers into a single functional block.
East-west traffic
Traffic flow where both the origination and destination of the data are contained within the same local data center network.
North-south traffic
Traffic flow that is either leaving the data center to an external source or entering the data center from an external source like the internet.
