allegory

A story, fictional or non-fictional, in which characters, things, and events represent qualities or concepts. The interaction of these characters, things, and events is meant to reveal an abstraction or a truth

alliteration

The repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of words

allusion

An indirect reference to something (usually a literary text, although it can be other things commonly known, such as plays, songs, historical events) with which the reader is supposed to be familiar

ambiguity

A word, phrase, or statement which contains more than one meaning

analogy

A comparison of two different things that are similar in some way

antecedent

A word, phrase, clause, or sentence to which another word (especially a following relative pronoun) refers

antithesis

Balancing words, phrases, or ideas that are strongly contrasted, often by means of grammatical structure

aphorism

A terse statement which expresses a general truth or moral principle

apostrophe

A figure of speech in which one directly addresses an absent or imaginary person, or some abstraction

atmosphere

Mood of a piece of writing, which is usually created by how the author describes the setting and background, as well as the characters and events within the story.
