ecology
the science that focuses on how organisms interacts w one another n their nonliving physical environemnt of matter and energy
ecologists study the 5 levels of matter….
biosphere, ecosystems, communities, populations, and organisms
living components
animals, plants, microbes
nonliving components
water, air, nutritients, rocks, heat, and solar energy
producers
organisms like green plants that make nutritients that they need from compounds and energy gathered from their environment through the process of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
where organisms capture solar energy and combine it CO2 and O2 to produce glucose (carbohydrates)
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6O2 + solar energy —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
what is geothermal energy used for
Producer bacteria live in dark and extremely hot water around fissures on the ocean floor. Their source of energy is the earths interior OR geothermal energy. they are an excdeption to solar energy.
Decomposers
Bacteria, fungi, molds and mushroom
Detritivores
worms, soil insects, hyenas, vultures
aerobic respiration
uses oxygen to convert glucose and other chemical compounds back into CO2 and H2O
aerobic respiration equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
Anaerobic respiration/fermentation
products of this process are methane gas, ethyl alchohol, acetic acid, and hydrogen sulfide
NOTE THAT…
photosynthesis is for PLANTS ONLY, while aerobic and anaerobic respiration are for organisims
life on land is supported by…
15 CM of topsoil/ the O horizon
