Membrane
A sheet-like tissue structure that covers or lines body surfaces, consisting of an epithelial layer supported by underlying connective tissue.
Cutaneous Membrane
A dry epithelial membrane forming the skin
Epithelium: keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
CT: loose areolar and dense irregular connective tissue.

Mucous Membrane
A wet epithelial membrane lining body structures that are open to the exterior Various epithelial types: stratified squamous (nonkeratinized), simple columnar, pseudostratified ciliated columnar
CT (lamina propria): loose areolar connective tissue layer.

Lamina Propria
The layer of loose areolar connective tissue that directly underlies the epithelial layer of a mucous membrane.
Serous Membrane
A wet epithelial membrane that lines body cavities closed to the exterior and covers organs within those cavities
Epithelium (mesothelium): simple squamous epithelium
CT: loose areolar connective tissue
Parietal → lines body cavity
Visceral → covers organ within the cavity

Mesothelium
The simple squamous epithelial layer of a serous membrane.
Parietal Layer
The outer portion of a serous membrane that lines the wall of a closed body cavity.
Visceral Layer
The inner portion of a serous membrane that directly covers an organ within a closed body cavity.
Pericardium
The serous membrane surrounding the heart, consisting of a parietal pericardium lining the pericardial cavity and a visceral pericardium covering the heart.
Pleura
The serous membrane associated with the lungs, consisting of a parietal pleura lining the cavity wall and a visceral pleura covering the lungs.
Peritoneum
The serous membrane associated with the abdominopelvic cavity, consisting of a parietal peritoneum lining the cavity wall and a visceral peritoneum covering abdominal organs.
Which type(s) of membranes is/are wet?
Mucous and serous membranes. Mucous membranes are kept moist by mucus from goblet cells or glands; serous membranes are moistened by serous fluid
Which type of membrane always has simple squamous epithelium?
Serous membranes
Which type of membrane has a laminate propria?
Mucous membranes
Which type of membrane always has keratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
Cutaneous membranes
The visceral pericardium would be covering which organ?
The heart
The parietal peritoneum would be lining which body cavity?
The abdominal cavity
What is the serous membrane associated with covering the lungs?
The pleura is the serous membrane that covers the lungs.
What two types of CT are associated with a cutaneous membrane?
Loose areolar and Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
