Obstetrics (OB)

The branch of medicine that focuses on women during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

Gynecology (GYN)

The branch of medicine that focuses on a woman’s health and reproductive organs.

OB/GYN Surgery Categories

The four categories used to classify surgical procedures in this specialty: vaginal, open abdomen, laparoscopic, or robotic.

Specialty OB/GYN Instruments

An assortment of tools that includes speculums, heavy grasping forceps, dilators, uterine curettes, uterine manipulators, heavy clamping forceps, curved needle holders, and heavy scissors.

Clamping and occluding

A category of instruments used to compress or close off vessels or tissues during surgical procedures.

Cutting and dissecting

A category of instruments used to divide, separate, or remove tissues.

Grasping and holding

A category of instruments designed to grip and manipulate tissue, organs, or other surgical materials.

Probing and dilating

A category of instruments used to explore or expand the diameter of an opening or duct.

Retracting and exposing

A category of instruments used to pull back tissues or organs to provide a clear view of the surgical site.

Suctioning and aspirating

A category of instruments used to remove blood, fluids, or debris from the operative field.

Suturing and stapling

A category of instruments used to join tissue edges or secure anatomical structures together.

Viewing

A category of instruments, such as scopes or speculums, that allow for visualization of internal anatomical structures.
