Scatter Radiation
secondary radiation that has been deflected from its original path after interacting with matter (usually via Compton scatter) without being fully absorbed, and traveling in random directions.
Absorbed Radiation
the portion of the x-ray beam that is taken up by tissue through complete energy transfer (usually via the photoelectric effect) producing no further radiation.
Remnant Radiation
all radiation that exits the patient and reaches the image receptor, including both useful transmitted photons and remnant scatter photons.
Remnant Scatter Radiation
the portion of scatter radiation that is deflected forward and reaches the image receptor.
Remnant x-rays
x-rays that pass through the patient and interact with the image receptor.
Luminance
the photometric measure of the luminous intensity (brightness) of a surface per unit area.
Grid
a device used to reduce the amount of scatter radiation reaching the receptor.
Compton Scatter
an interaction between an incident x-ray photon and a loosely bound outer-shell electron, in which the photon transfers part of its energy to the electron (causing the electron to be ejected) and is deflected from its original path with reduced energy.
Photoelectric Absorption
an interaction between an incident x-ray photon and a tightly bound inner-shell electron, in which the photon's entire energy is absorbed, ejecting the electron from the atom.
