Bystander Apathy
The tendency of people in a social situation not to go to the aid of strangers in an emergency.
Diffusion of Responsibility
When there are many observers of an incident, each person feels that the responsibility to help is shared among all the observers.
Altruism
Doing something for someone else without getting anything for yourself.
Pluralistic Ignorance
A situation in which each individual believes themselves to be the only exception to the accepted beliefs or behavior of their group.
Helping Behavior
Voluntary actions taken to help others.
Good Samaritan
A charitable or helpful person who stops to help a stranger.
Extrinsic Reward
External, physical rewards received from good deeds, such as money or gifts.
Intrinsic Reward
Internal, emotional rewards such as feeling good about oneself after doing something good.
Modelled Help
Assistance demonstrated by a helper that may inspire others to provide help as well.
Ecological Validity
The extent to which research findings can be generalized to real-world settings.
