why do vascular plants grow taller than non-vascular plants?
they have long vascular tissue that allows them to transport water, so they don’t have to grow so low to the ground
what is the common name for lycophyta?
club mosses

what is this? what phylum does it belong to?
club moss
phylum lycophyta
what is the common name for psilotophyta?
wisk ferns

what is this? what phylum does it belong to?
wisk fern
psilotophyta
what is the common name for sphenophyta?
horsetails

what is this? what phylum does it belong to?
horsetails
sphenophyta
what is the common name for pterophyta?
ferns

what is this? what phylum does it belong to?
ferns
pterophyta

what is the life cycle of a fern (pterophyta)?
1) germination: each spore grows into a haploid gametophyte (prothallus)
2) gametophyte stage: produces antheridia (sperm) and archegonia (eggs)
3) fertilization: sperm swims through water to reach the egg → forms zygote (2n)
4) sporophyte development: zygote grows into a new diploid sporophyte, which eventually becomes a mature fern

why do pterophyta/ferns have “sori?” what purpose do they serve? what phylum does this belong to?
sori are found on the underside of fern leaves. they contain spores that will eventually turn into the male and female gamteophytes
this belongs to the phylum pterophyta

what phylum is shaped like a green heart underneath a microscope?
pterophyta

what is the “green heart” called in an pterophyta? what 3 structures does it contain?
prothallus
containing antheridium, archegonium and rhizoids
what is the dominant stage of a lycophyta/club moss?
sporophyte-dominant
what is the dominant stage of a psilotophyta/wisk fern?
sporophyte-dominant
what is the dominant stage of a sphenophyta/horsetail?
sporophyte-dominant
what is the dominant stage of a pterophyta/fern?
