Who can authorise flights?

The CO or designate (Flight Authorisation Officer - FAO)

What shall the authorising officer ensure?

-The flight or mission is in direct interest of DND business

-Flight is authorised IAW orders/regulations

-Aircrew are qualified and competent to accomplish assigned duty

-The aircrew are properly briefed and understand the assigned duty

Types of flights to be authorised

Allow aircrew to accomplish flying requirements;

Perform strategic, tactical and combat operations

Train aircraft personnel in accordance with approved TS/TP course syllabus

Evaluate aircraft performance;

Meet national health safety or defense interests;

Save human life; and

Perform other official missions as directed in writing by higher authority.

Minimum crew required to fly Dash-8 at 402

Two pilots, AC and Co-Pilot

2 pilots, 2 instructors, 4 students

Pilot duties

Flight Planning

Mission Planning (with TML)

Emergency of the Day (EOD)

Safety of flight/Safe Operation of a/c

Ensure the flight has been authorized.

Pilot Flying

Always in command of the automated man-machine interface, even with the use of full automation.

Pilot Monitoring

Primary safety observer for the flight

Particularly Important during critical phases of flight or low altitude operations

Communicate information to correct errors, counter threats, and assist the PF

Aircraft Commander has command of and responsibility for:

The aircraft, crew, and passengers

Crew Commander / Mission Commander

Responsible for mission accomplishment, tactical employment of the aircraft, and all administrative/disciplinary matters pertaining to the mission. If not present, responsibilities revert to AC

Training Mission Lead

Qualified Instructor, B Cat or higher

Considers mission impact of delays on crew day

Determine Go/No Go items

Complete Mission Documentation

Consult with 402 Sqn Ops

Know weather minimums

Review performance and enabling objectives required by the students

Provide Feedback to the students
