Assess the head, looking and feeling for DCAP-BTLS (Deformities, Contusions, Abrasions, Punctures, Burns, Tenderness, Lacerations, Swelling). Have a partner maintain in-line spinal stabilization if indicated.

Assess the neck.
What is the third step in a rapid exam to identify life threats?
Assess the chest and listen to breath sounds on both sides.
What is the fourth step in a rapid exam to identify life threats?
Assess the abdomen.
What is the fifth step in a rapid exam to identify life threats?
Assess the pelvis. If there is no pain, gently compress the pelvis downward and inward to check for tenderness and instability.
What is the sixth step in a rapid exam to identify life threats?
Assess all four extremities. Check the pulse, motor, and sensory function.
What is the seventh step in a rapid exam to identify life threats?
Assess the patient’s back. If spinal immobilization is needed, log roll the patient in one motion to minimize spinal movement.
