Takes or verbalizes appropriate PPE precautions
“BSI, my scene is safe.”
Gathers appropriate equipment
“I’ve gathered my oxygen tank, my NRB mask, and my regulator.”
Cracks valve on the oxygen tank
“I’m cracking the valve open to clear away any debris.”
Assembles the regulator to the oxygen tank
“I will now assemble the regulator.”
Opens oxygen tank valve
“I’m going to reopen my oxygen tank valve.” SET IT DOWN.
Checks tank pressure and any leaks
“I’m going to check the tank pressure, it’s at [BLANK]. I’m now going to check for leaks — I don’t hear any.”
Attaches NRB mask to correct port of regulator
“I’m now going to attach the mask to the regulator port.”
Turns on oxygen flow to prefill reservoir bag & adjusts to a rate of 10 LPM
“I’m going to turn the oxygen to prefill the reservoir bag and adjust the regulator to a flow rate of 10 LPM.”
Attaches mask to patient’s face
“I’m now going to attach the mask and make sure it fits snugly over the nose and mouth—and tighten the sides.”
Checks for responsiveness
“Hello, sir? Can you hear me?”
Check breathing and pulse simultaneously for no more than 10 seconds
“I’m going to check pulse and breathing for no more than 10 seconds.”
Request additional EMS assistance
“I need additional EMS assistance.”
Opens airway properly
“'I’m going to do a head-tilt, chin-lift to open his airway properly.”
Prepares rigid suction catheter
“I have my rigid suction catheter prepped.”
Inserts suction without applying suction, then suctions the mouth & oropharynx
“I’m going to measure the suction from tip of mouth to tip of earlobe, and then insert it only as far as I’ve measured for no more than 10 seconds, and suction only on the way out.”
Opens airway manually
“I am now going to open his airway again.”
Inserts OPA
“I’m going to measure the OPA the same way I measured the suction, and insert it into his mouth.”
Ventilates patient immediately using BVM unattached to oxygen
“I’m going to now give him 2 rescue breaths—1 every 6 seconds.”
Re-checks pulse for no more than 10 seconds
“I’m now going to re-check his pulse for no more than 10 seconds.”
Attaches BVM assembly to oxygen [15 LPM]
“I am now going to attach the BVM to the regulator port and adjust the flow rate to 15 LPM.”
Ventilates patient properly
“I am now going to give 10 breaths per minute—1 every 6 seconds.”
How do you know if you are delivering appropriate volumes with each ventilation?
“If there’s equal rise and chest fall.”
