Altar
A special table that occupies the principal place in the temple where the Eucharist is celebrated.
Corporal
A small cloth placed by the priest on top of the large altar cloth upon which the chalice and paten are placed.
Chalice (Cáliz)
The vessel used to hold the wine, representing Jesus, and a few drops of water, representing the faithful.
Paten (Patena)
A metal plate used to hold the large Host during the celebration.
Ciborium (Copón)
A large metal cup used for small hosts which, once consecrated, are kept in the Tabernacle.
Tabernacle (Sagrario)
The place where the consecrated Hosts are stored and protected.
Purificator (Purificador)
A small rectangular cloth used to clean and dry the chalice, the ciborium, and the paten.
Pall (Palia)
A small square folder or card used to cover the chalice.
Cruets (Vinajeras)
Crystal vessels that contain the wine and the water presented to the priest.
Missal (Misal)
The book used during the Mass that contains all the prayers of the liturgy.
Lectern (Atril)
A wooden base or cushion located on the altar where the Missal is placed.
Ambo (Ambón)
A piece of furniture or stand where people go to read the Word of God.
Lectionary (Leccionario)
The book placed on the ambo that contains the written Word of God.
Candles (Velas)
Lit objects placed on or near the altar as a sign that Jesus is alive.
Liturgical Color: Purple (Morado)
Used during Advent and Lent to signify preparation and readiness of the heart, and also in masses for the deceased.
Liturgical Color: White (Blanco)
Used during the most important feasts, such as Christmas and Easter, and for festivities of the Virgin Mary.
Liturgical Color: Green (Verde)
Used during Ordinary Time, which occurs after a major feast when neither preparation nor a specific feast is active.
Liturgical Color: Red (Rojo)
Used for Pentecost, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and the feasts of martyrs.
Alb (Alba)
The basic long white vestment for ministers, signifying the purity of the soul washed by baptism.
Cincture (Cíngulo)
A cord that ties the alb at the waist, symbolizing chastity.
Stole (Estola)
A long band of cloth worn over the shoulders symbolizing priestly authority.
Chasuble (Casulla)
The outermost vestment worn over the alb and stole, symbolizing the yoke of Christ and charity.
Amice (Amito)
A liturgical ornament listed as part of the priest's vestments.
Dalmatic (Dalmática)
A name for the first chasuble said to have been woven in Dalmatia.
Domingo in albis
The historical name for the second Sunday of Easter when those baptized a week prior would remove their white albs.
