Oral Cavity
Anterior & Lateral Boarders = Teeth
Floor = Mylohyoid
Roof = Hard/Soft Palates
Posterior = Arches
Buccal Vestibule
Between teeth and cheeks
- Houses parotid duct
Labial Vestibule
between the teeth and lips
Hard Palate
Composed of maxilla and palatine bones
Incisive foramen
nasopalatine nerve
Greater Palatine Foramen
Greater palatine VANS
Lesser Palatine Foramen
lesser palatine VANS
Palatoglossus Muscle
Elevates posterior tongue
Depresses soft palate
constricts isthmus of fauces (opening to oropharnyx)
- Vagus Nerve
Palatopharyngeus Muscle
Tenses soft palate
moves pharynx anterosuperiorly during swallowing
- Vagus Nerve
levator veli palatini
Elevates soft palate during swallowing and yawning
- Vagus Nerve
Tensor veli palatini
tenses soft palate (pulls laterally)
opens aperture of pharyngotympanic (auditory) tube during yawning
- Trigeminal (Mandibular V3)
Musuclus Uvulae
Shortens uvula, pulls it superiorly
- Vagus Nerve
Genioglossus
Bilateral: Protracts tongue to stick apex out of mouth, depresses central part of tongue
Unilateral = Deviates tongue to contralateral side
Innervation - Hypogossal N
Hyoglossus
Depress and shorten tongue
Innervation - Hypogossal N
Styloglossus
Retracts tongue, curls/elevates the side, works with genioglossus to form central "trough" for drinking
Innervation - Hypoglossal N
Terminal Sulcus of the Tongue
groove behind the V-shaped vallate papillae
Lingual Sulcus
runs anteriorly along the midline of the tongue dorsum
Circumvallate Papillae
- Taste buds
- back of tongue
Foliate Papillae
- Taste buds
on side walls of tongue
filliform papillae
- Sensory NOT taste
Fungiform papillae
- Taste buds
Palatine Tonsils
located between the anterior (Palatoglossus) and posterior (Palatopharyngeus) arches
- most susceptible to tonsillitis and stones
Lingual Tonsils
back of tongue
pharyngeal tonsils (adenoids)
Found in posterior nasal cavity
Tubal Tonsils
Posterior to the openings of the auditory tubes into the pharynx
Parotid Gland
salivary gland within the cheek, just anterior to the ear
- Sympathetic = superior cervical ganglion
- Parasympathetic = Glossopharyngeal N
- Sensory = Auriculotemporal Nerve (CN V3)
Parotid (Stensen's) Duct
Travels w/ buccal nn.
- empties into the buccal vestibule at the level of the second upper molar via the parotid papilla
- Pierces Buccinator to get into mouth
Submandibular Gland
Smaller salivary gland located under the jaw
- Supplied by facial aa. & vv.
- Sympathetic = Superior cervical ganglion
- Parasympathetic = Facial n. via chorda tympani to submandibular ganglion
Submandibular (Wharton's) Duct
Submandibular & Sublingual glands
- Located next to sublingual caruncle
Sublingual Gland
salivary gland under the tongue
- Supplied by lingual and facial aa. & vv.
- Sympathetic = Superior cervical ganglion
- Parasympathetic = Facial n. via chorda tympani to submandibular ganglion
