La famille nucléaire
The nuclear/traditional family: The nuclear or traditional family is the most common family model today. It's made up of a couple and their child(ren).
La famille monoparentale
The single-parent family: Single-parent families result from a divorce or the death of a spouse. They include one parent living alone with one or more children.
La famille recomposée
The blended/step-family: The blended family includes a couple (married or not) plus at least one child from a previous relationship, who ends up with a step-mother or step-father.
La famille élargie
The extended family: The extended family brings together, in one place, all the people connected by blood or marriage.
La famille homoparentale
The same-sex parent family: The child lives with their biological father or mother and that parent's same-sex partner. (The child may also have been adopted by the couple.)
Un demi-frère
A half-brother: A brother through the father or mother only.
Une demi-sœur
A half-sister: A sister through the father or mother only.
Une belle-mère
A step-mother: The wife of one of the parents, in relation to the children from another union.
Un beau-père
A step-father: The husband of one of the parents, in relation to the children from another union.
La cellule familiale
The family unit: A group of people sharing a certain unity.
Un foyer
A household: A family place (household).
Une famille nombreuse
A large family: A family is called "large" when it has three or more children.

A claim/demand: A request.

Unemployment: Job searching / being out of work.
