Closed bed
A bed that is not in use, prepared for a new patient or resident, or made for a resident who is up during the day.
Open bed
A bed in use where the top linens are fan-folded back so the person can get into bed.
Occupied bed
A bed that is made with the person still in it.
Surgical bed
Also known as a recovery or post-operative bed, it is made for persons returning from surgery, arriving by ambulance, or being transferred by stretcher.
Medical asepsis
The practice of holding linens away from the body, never shaking them to avoid spreading microbes, and placing clean linens only on clean surfaces.
Drawsheet
A small sheet placed over the middle of the bottom sheet.
Cotton drawsheet
A sheet used to keep the mattress and bottom linens clean, or as an assist device to move and transfer persons in bed.
Waterproof drawsheet
A sheet that protects the mattress and bottom linens from dampness and soiling.
Fan-folded
The method used to fold back top linens on an open bed so the person can easily get into bed.
Recovery bed
Another name for a surgical bed, used for persons returning to their rooms from surgery.
Post-operative bed
A synonym for a surgical bed or recovery bed.
