Data
A collection of raw facts or figures that do not mean anything unless processed.
Information
Processed data that is meaningful and relevant.
Data Processing Cycle
The five-stage process that converts raw data into information: collection, preparation, input, processing, and output.
Collection
The stage where data is gathered; raw data is collected.
Preparation
The stage where data is organized into a suitable form for checking and use, ensuring correct units, periods, etc.
Input
Entering data into a computer so it can be processed.
Processing
Transforming data through steps to produce useful information.
Output
Displaying or returning the processed information to the user in forms such as graphs, documents, audio, or video.
Raw data
Unprocessed data collected from measurement or observation.
GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out)
The principle that poor-quality input leads to poor-quality output; data quality affects results.
