Mathematics
The study of pattern and structure, which provides a tool to quantify, organize, and control the world, predict natural phenomena, and make life easier.
Patterns in Nature
Visible regularities of form found in the natural world and universe that serve as vital clues to the rules governing natural processes.
Logic Patterns
Patterns related to geometric and number patterns that assist in classifying objects or figures based on characteristics or sequences of attributes.
Number Pattern
A list or set of numbers following a specific sequence or arrangement in ascending or descending order through repeated arithmetical operations.
Arithmetic Number Pattern
A number sequence created by adding or subtracting the same fixed value each time, known as the common difference.
Geometric Number Pattern
A number sequence created where every successive term is obtained by multiplying or dividing the previous term by the same constant factor.
Fibonacci Sequence
A famous number pattern (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,…) formed by adding the two preceding numbers to obtain the next number.
Symmetry
A natural pattern where a part of an object maintains its shape or form following a transformation, causing two or more parts to appear balanced or identical.
Mirror Symmetry
Also known as bilateral symmetry, a type of symmetry wherein two sides are identical with respect to an imaginary dividing line called the line of symmetry.
Radial Symmetry
Also known as rotational symmetry, a type of symmetry wherein more than two parts of an object are identical with respect to a central point called the point of symmetry.
Fractals
Patterns formed through self-repeating iterations characterized by fractal dimensions, in which a larger structure is repeatedly reproduced in smaller versions of itself.
Spirals
A natural pattern formed when a curve winds continuously around a central point or focus.
Logarithmic Spiral
The most common form of spiral in nature, closely associated with the Fibonacci sequence and formed by drawing quarter-circle arcs inside expanding squares.
Meanders
Patterns characterized by a series of regular, sinuous winding curves, bends, and turns, resembling a trigonometric sine wave.
Waves
Disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another across surfaces without transferring actual matter.
Bubbles
Spherical forms consisting of a thin film of soapy water surrounding air that naturally minimize their surface area for a given volume due to cohesive forces.
Plateau's Laws
The mathematical rules governing the structure and behavior of bubbles when they form a mass of foam.
Tessellations
Patterns on surfaces covered completely by regularly repeating two-dimensional shapes, where each individual cell is called a tile.
Cracks
Linear fractures appearing on surfaces as a result of stress relief, typically breaking into three cracks that intersect at 120∘ angles at a single node.
Turing's Model
A reaction-diffusion model formulated by English mathematician Alan Turing using partial differential equations to mathematically explain animal skin patterns like spots and stripes.
Packing Problem
The mathematical challenge of finding the optimum method to fill up a given space, such as using hexagonal formations rather than square formations to maximize coverage.
Malthusian Growth Model
A model discovered by Robert Thomas Malthus demonstrating that population growth is directly proportional to current population size, expressed exponentially as P(t)=P0ekt.
Galton Board
Also known as a Quincunx, a triangular pin-grid board used to demonstrate how randomly dropped balls naturally form a normal distribution curve.
Normal Distribution
A common probability distribution in nature where random data naturally forms a symmetrical bell-shaped pattern around a central value.
