Osteocyte
A mature Osteoblast that cannot divide and is located in the Lacune.
Osteoblast
Bone cells that secrete osteoids and become bone via mitosis.
Osteoclast
Bone cells that dematerialize bone to release minerals such as calcium into the blood.
Periosteum
The outside covering of the bone.
Endochondral Ossification
The process of hard bone elongation.
Condyle
A large round process.
Foramen
A hole in the bone for arteries, veins, and nerves.
Sinus
A hollow cavity within a bone.
Suture
A fibrous joint that holds the bones of the skull together.
Styloid process
A pointy process on a bone.
Trochanter
A very large bump located on the femur bones.
Tubercle
A rounded bump that serves as a site for muscle or ligament attachment.
Tuberosity
A rounded bump with a gradual slope.
Lordosis
A spinal curve with the convexity of the curve facing anterior.
Kyphosis
A spinal curve with the concavity of the curve facing anterior.
S-shaped bone
The description given for the clavicle in the appendicular skeleton.
Fibrous Joints
Joints held by connective tissue, such as sutures.
Cartilaginous Joints
Joints held by cartilage, such as the disks in the spine or the pubic symphysis.
Synovial Joints
The most common type of joint, held by a synovial membrane and fluid, involving cartilage at the ends of bones, ligaments, and menisci.
Inversion
Movement where the foot moves in or medially.
Eversion
Movement where the foot moves out or laterally.
