define infection
Refers to the measures taken to prevent the spread of microorganisms that have entered tissues, causing damage and injury either locally or systemically.
Chain of Infection
The sequence of events including Pathogen, Reservoir, Portal of exit, Mode of transmission, Portal of entry, and Susceptible host that leads to the transmission of an infectious agent.
Breaking the Chain of Infection
Involves actions like breaking the source, blocking the portal of exit, interrupting the mode of transmission, protecting the portal of entry, and increasing host defense to prevent the spread of infection.
Standard Precaution
Minimum infection prevention practices applied in all client care settings, regardless of the patient's infection status, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment use, safe injection practices, and respiratory hygiene.
Types of Precaution
Include Droplet precaution, Contact precaution, and Airborne precaution, each requiring specific measures like hand cleaning, protective equipment use, and environmental control to prevent infection spread.
Purpose of Infection Control
Aimed at protecting patients from infections, particularly those involving blood-borne pathogens, by implementing practices like hand hygiene, sterilization, and waste management.
Medical Asepsis
Also known as 'clean technique' or 'aseptic technique,' involves reducing pathogens purposefully to prevent their transfer during medical procedures.
Components of Medical Asepsis
Include understanding the concepts of 'dirty,' 'clean,' and 'sterile,' maintaining their separation, and taking immediate action to address contamination.
