Positive Prejudice
An assumption that certain racial or ethnic groups possess favorable traits, often placing pressure on individuals to conform to these stereotypes.
Quiet Discrimination
Subtle, non-explicit discrimination where individuals avoid or change their behavior to distance themselves from certain groups.
Presumed Discriminator
A person who holds negative beliefs about a racial group and takes action based on those beliefs, e.g., members of the KKK.
Presumed Nondiscriminator
Someone who harbors unfavorable thoughts about a racial group but refrains from acting on those thoughts due to fear of social or legal consequences.
Unprejudiced Discriminator
A person who does not hold negative views about a racial group but still discriminates for personal benefit or convenience.
Racial Essentialism
The belief that distinct racial groups have inherent, unchangeable characteristics that determine their success or abilities.
Redlining
A discriminatory practice where access to mortgage loans or insurance is denied based on the racial composition of neighborhoods.
Mass Incarceration
The overrepresentation of African Americans in the criminal justice system, often as a result of systemic racism.
Coded Language
Vague terms employed in political discourse that indirectly refer to race or racial inequalities.
Institutional Racism
Policies or practices within institutions that result in the unequal treatment of individuals based on race.
