Speedlight Power Output
Varies from brand to brand and with different models, determining the f-stop ranges for exposures with the flash.
Manual Mode with a Speedlight
Mode where the flash delivers a consistent measurement of light regardless of ambient exposure, crop, or lens focal length.
TTL Mode
Mode where light passes through the lens and is measured at the sensor, with the camera and speedlight working together to determine flash output.
Flash Bracket
Raising the flash higher above the camera to reduce the red eye effect and prevent shadows behind the subject.
Disabling Zoom Head Tracking
Setting the zoom to Manual Zoom to disable zoom head tracking, providing a consistent and reliable output every time the flash fires.
Inverse Square Law
States that moving the light closer increases the exposure and moving the light further away decreases the exposure.
Using Speedlight On-Camera
Results in harsh and flat lighting due to the small light source and direct frontal illumination.
Tracking controls
Controls that alter the output of the flash based on the focal length of the lens in use.
Zoom head
The zoom head moves in and out to focus the light or spread the light to coincide with the angle of view of the lens.
TTL or eTTL
Using a zoom lens, and photographing at various camera-to-subject distances.
