Migration
The movement of people from their usual residence to a new location, either internationally or within a state.
International Migrant
A person who changes their country of usual residence.
Usual Residence
The place where a person lives and spends their daily rest.
Resident
A person who has lived in a country for most of the past year or intends to return within 12 months.
Long-term Migrant
A person who moves to a country for longer than 12 months, becoming a new resident.
Short-term Migrant
A person who moves to a country for at least 3 months but less than a year, excluding recreation, family visits, business, medical treatment, or pilgrimage.
Forced Migration
Migration movement involving duress, coercion, or compulsion.
Voluntary Migration
Migration based on one's free will and initiative.
Refugees/Asylum Seekers
Individuals fleeing political persecution across internationally recognized borders.
Labor Migration
Movement of people for employment purposes, either internationally or within their own country.
Push Factors
Factors that cause people to leave a location; characteristic of the origin country.
Pull Factors
Factors that attract people to a new location; characteristic of the receiving country.
South-North Migration
Migration from countries in the Global South to countries in the Global North.
South-South Migration
Migration between countries in the Global South.

The idea that democracies face pressure to implement more restrictive immigration policies.
Illiberal Paradox
The observation that autocracies can push for more open migration policies due to a lack of public opinion constraints.

People displaced due to environmental challenges from climate change.

Migration decisions are based on relative wages; people move to countries where they expect to earn more.
