Things to remember for synthesis essay?
-Develop sophistication via complexities and tensions e.g limitations/implications of your arguement
-consistantly use strong rhetorical choices
-read question CAREFULLY
-go with what you can best argue for, not necessarily what you believe
-consider strengths/weaknesses of each arguement
-CITE SOURCES
-paraphrase/quote from source. AVOID generalized summary
-address opposition for complexity point.
what is the Rhetorical analysis essay?
analyzing the techniques used in a text to persuade or convey an argument.
Rhetorical analysis Introduction format
Limit to four sentences, include the authority of the author and their exigence, the audience, and 1 or two sentences summarizing the text and/or paraphrasing arguments. End with the position statement, which contains the author/s title, purpose (call to action) thematic message (meaning of the text, I.e trauma leads to violence or something) audienceand at least three rhetorical techniques used (that you plan on analyzing during your essay).
Body paragraph structure for rhetorical analysis essay
TEAL for body paragraph:
T= Type of device/Technique used
E= specific Evidence/Example of rhetorical technique
A= Analysis of impact, significance, and, if applicable, limitations of the rhetorical technique for the audience in context.
L= Line of reasoning
START WITH TOPIC SENTENCE (line of reasoning basically I think)
What is a line of reasoning and what is an example of one (make one up)
Line of reasoning identifies the steps an author takes throughout their writing
Examples:
[“to establish the scope of cigarettes impact”]…..
[“to reinforce the need for significant action”]…
[“dumas begins by exploring the scope of prejudice faced by immigrants in the US when she illustrates how people, starting in childhood, reject or mock the unknown”]….
Conclusion for rhetorical analysis essay?
follow the WIN format:
W- What message and position is revealed through the authors writing— reiterate or extend position statement.
I- Insight about the impact and quality of the message
N- Note the relevance of the argument IN ITS TIME and, if applicable, for you, for others, and our world today.
Name three rhetorical technique examples
-Appeals to ethos, logos, pathos (NEVER REFER TO ACTUAL NAME. BE MORE SPECIFIC.)
-Alliteration
-Imagery (appeals to readers senses, vivid)
-Irony
-Repetition
-Organization
-Paradox (appears contradictory but reveals a deeper meaning)
-parallels (in writing structure or perhaps subject)
-metaphor/simile/comparison
-hyperbole (evoke feelings, vividness)
-understatement (can be humorous or emphatic)
-Anaphora (repetition within groups of sentences/lines)
-Mood/tone (vibes, mostly choices)
-diction (strategic word choice by author)
-punctuation (heighten emotional impact)
Timing of the rhetorical analysis essay
40 minutes for rhetorical analysis essay. use 5-7 minutes to make a plan. remember to annotate while you read.

Arguement essay introduction
-identify/ clarify the issue and context.
-write the thesis statement: your final sentence in the intro that EXPLICITlY states your position and lays out groundwork.

-Oppositional idea. topic sentence states opponents argument. then refute it . end with restatement of position.

Following paragraphs devlop and support your position. Develop a line of reasoning. Use PEA structure:
