Hematocrit
The volume percentage of red blood cells in blood.
Automated hematocrit result
Obtained using multiparameter instruments, calculated from individual MCVs and red cell count.
MCV
Mean Corpuscular Volume; a measure of the average volume of a red blood cell.
Specimen errors
Errors that can falsely decrease Hct values due to improper collection or handling.
EDTA tube
A tube containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid used for collecting blood samples.
RBC shrinkage
The reduction in size of red blood cells due to inadequate filling of collection tubes.
Technical errors
Errors occurring during the testing process, such as overcentrifugation or improper tube sealing.
Overcentrifugation
Excessive spinning of blood samples in a centrifuge that can lead to inaccurate results.
Macrocytic anemia
A condition characterized by larger than normal red blood cells.
Sickle cell anemia
A genetic blood disorder where red blood cells become misshapen, affecting their ability to transport oxygen.
Falsely elevated Hct levels
Inaccurate high hematocrit readings commonly seen in patients with certain RBC disorders.
