Dissociation
The process by which an ionic compound dissolves in water and breaks into free ions (e.g., NaCl(s) → Na+(aq) + Cl−(aq)).
Ionic equation
A chemical equation for a reaction in aqueous solution written with dissolved substances shown as ions; this is the dissociated form of the overall equation.
Aqueous solution
A solution in which the solvent is water, and solutes are present as ions or molecules in water.
Aqueous (aq)
Notation indicating that a substance is dissolved in water.
Net ionic equation
An ionic equation that shows only the species that participate in the reaction after removing non-participating species.
